The Updated Genuine Student Requirement for Australian Student Visas
Previously, international students applying for a student visa to Australia needed to complete the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) assessment. This process aimed to confirm that applicants genuinely intended to pursue education in Australia. It required them to answer a questionnaire, submit a 300-word personal statement, and sometimes attend an interview.
Starting March 23, 2024, the student visa application process will include the Genuine Student (GS) requirement, replacing the GTE assessment. Applicants are no longer required to submit a personal statement; instead, they will answer specific, targeted questions to better assess their intentions and personal circumstances.
Genuine Student (GS) Requirement Questions
The GS requirement focuses on gaining a detailed understanding of applicants’ motivations and situations. Applicants will be asked to address questions such as:
- Their current personal circumstances, including family ties, community connections, employment, and financial status.
- Reasons for choosing their specific course and Australia as their study destination.
- How their chosen course will benefit their future, along with details of any previous studies in Australia.
- For those switching visa types, the reasons behind applying for a Student visa.
Student Visa Declaration Updates
The new process includes a revised Student Visa Declaration, where applicants must confirm:
- They understand the expectations of being a genuine student in Australia.
- They have reviewed and will comply with student visa rules, including notifying authorities of any changes in circumstances.
- While some graduates may qualify for permanent residency, most students must leave Australia after their studies unless eligible otherwise.
Changes to English Language Proficiency Requirements
In December 2023, the Australian Government announced stricter English language requirements for Student and Temporary Graduate visas, effective early 2024. The new minimum scores are as follows:
- Student visas: IELTS 6.0 (up from 5.5).
- Temporary Graduate visas: IELTS 6.5 (up from 6.0).
- ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students): IELTS 5.0 (up from 4.5).
- University foundation or pathway programs: IELTS 5.5.
These updates provide students with various pathways to enhance their English skills, allowing progression to further education. Students with lower proficiency can begin with an ELICOS or pathway program before advancing.
Preparing for These Changes
International students planning to apply for an Australian Student visa should:
- Prepare detailed responses to potential GS requirement questions.
- Practice and refine answers with input from trusted advisors or family.
- Take practice English proficiency tests to meet the new standards.
